Jim Farber: AOL strikes wrong chord

Jim Farber's "Daily Dish & Gossip" column in The New York Daily News recently asked Does music have a sexual orientation? Read what he had to say.

I've had the opportunity now to go check out the article - thank you for bringing it to people's attention on your blog - and I have to say...

What a big pile of monkey-do. The very idea. AOL manages to insult any and all intelligent, reasonable people regardless of their sexual orientation. To be fair, AOL isn't the only one to do this - indeed, here in the UK we have 'Gaydar Radio' which is, in fact, run by and for gay men exclusively and feeds an appalling diet of constant techno, cheesy pop and Madonna, Cher, more Madonna... you get the picture....

Only SOME gay men like this music, or I should say only a tiny minority like it ALL THE DAMN TIME. What makes music gay or lesbian? Who knows? AOL obviously thinks it does, as do stations like Gaydar.

Okay, operating on the assumption that music is gay because gay people like it, then I'd like to set up Poofs FM right now. It will broadcast Madonna, for sure, as well as some Cher, Eurythmics, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure... even a bit of Donna Summer... but also Nirvana, The Editors, Kate Bush, Loreena McKennitt, Kaiser Chiefs, Divine Comedy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sex Pistols, James Blunt, Frank Sinatra... Woah. Better stop there...

The point is, my musical tastes are diverse. Different strokes for different folks? Well, actually, different tunes for different moods, days, times, events... Music, damn it, is at its core a deeply emotional fluid thing. It connects, it exhilarates, it supports and sustains. It is not, and never has been, about the specific fact of which orifices or appendages we prefer our lovers to have.

It's one thing to recognise diversity. Quite another to insist the queens all wear pink and glitter and listen to Maria Carey. Rock on! Well, some of the time... x

Amen, friend! I like just about every kind of music that exists - just not all at the same time. Where/when/what's happening all enter into the equation of what I want to hear at any given "now".
