Spam is rampant lately. I haven't had a problem since switching to haloscan from blogger comments which I highly recommend.
However, I haven't moved my old blogger comments to haloscan -- wasn't sure the correct way to do it, so I get spam in the old threads that still have blogger comments, and what's really infuriating is I'll get the same one about 12 times, all at once.
I saw the same stuff on a blog in New Zealand today and he switched to word verification also.
By the way, word verification SUCKS when you're intoxicated. :-)
Sad thing is, those captcha codes only stop a percentage. I've got the best anti-spam plugins going running on my site and still get between 1 and 20 viagra spams every day. x

I hear ya, Jami. It feels silly for me to have the word ver, but it's better than havin' spam comments to delete.
