I'd say the main cause is that the middle class doesn't want to live like they're merely in the middle. The primary problem is attempting to live above their means.
I'd second that... but it's not like there's been a push from all those trickle down economic geniuses... And advertising. And all of it. Unemployment and lack of health care doesn't help either. Boy, I'm a grouch today!
